Heat Indices Could Reach 105 Degrees This Week: Georgia Weather

Heat indices could approach advisory level near 105 degrees this week, the National Weather Service warns. Thunderstorms are also possible.

By Kathleen Sturgeon, Patch Staff  Jul 1, 2019
GEORGIA — July is here and with it comes a warning from the National Weather Service that the temperature this week could climb past 100 degrees.

Heat indices could approach advisory level, near 105 degrees, across portions of the area, particularly central Georgia and eastern north Georgia, Tuesday through Thursday, the NWS said.

The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature, the NWS said.
Additionally, a Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for portions of north and central Georgia by the NWS.

Isolated thunderstorms are possible Monday afternoon across portions of the area. While severe storms are not expected at this time, the NWS said it is possible some storms could become strong and produce gusty winds, occasional lightning, and locally heavy rain.

While overall thunderstorm chances remain isolated Tuesday, the NWS said chances increase for scattered thunderstorms Wednesday through Saturday. Some strong storms are possible and isolated severe cannot be ruled out.

The next seven days' forecast includes:

Monday
A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Sunny, with a high near 93. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Holly Mill
Friday is our Holly Mill, 4 phase, 663 home subdivision's trash day.
I can only address my own limited area of Holly Mill Village Drive and the HM HOA Recreation Area - there were no issues that I saw today in the returning of trash bins to the residents property.
This time around they were not left in the street as in prior pickups. So perhaps word has filtered down from top mgmt that the crew(s) needed to do the job properly.
I hope that in weeks to come it won't revert to the sloppy work Advanced was doing.
As the saying goes: "one swallow doesn't make a season." so we will have to see if this is now corrected or just fixed for this week.

Still no pick up for the 3 cans of trash at the HM Rec Area on Keeter Road. Trash has been there for 7 days that I know of.

ADVANCED DISPOSAL

Seems that they are not about to change how they leave their empty containers after the trash has been emptied. I wrote about this last week and even complained to their HQ who acknowledged and said they would refer this to their local GM.

Clearly they are not interested in fixing the problem and in fact there seems to be more containers left in the roadway than last week.

Time to get another trash company.

But the issue of WHY we ever hired them remains. They are 'F' rated by the BBB for each of their 37 locations in Georgia. Consumer complaint sites all have unfavorable posts about them.

So who at City dropped the ball last year when deciding to hire this bunch?

ADVANCED DISPOSAL UPDATE   Councilmember, Sandy McGrew Ward 1 has replied on the topic of Advanced Disposal and that is added to the site for the information of any Canton residents. Obviously anyone having issues with Advanced should let officials at City know their concerns.
Below is my reply to the Councilmember and her earlier email to me.

Subject: HOLLY MILL - Advanced Disposal Trash Collection, 2nd Complaint to City
Thank you for your input on this Advanced Disposal problem.
The streets in these subdivisions are not overly broad to start with and drivers dodging trash cans should not be necessary as it would only take a few seconds more to put them back onto the residents property.I was somewhat disappointed in a prior reply from City that ". . . if the homeowner placed the can in the roadway, it was placed back in the roadway" .
I can assure you that residents do NOT set our trash cans out in the roadway.By now I am sure that Advanced has heard from the City on this issue, they have heard from me at Advanced HQ and said that the info would be passed down to the local GM for this area.
So perhaps between input from City and community members the pick up crews will be doing a better job in the coming week.
Appreciate your interest and if you happen to get a Advanced reply I would be interested in adding it to both my Community Facebook page and the Holly Mill blogsite.

Mr. Harris,
Thank you for letting us know that this issue is still going on. We will ask staff to look into it. We are aware that Advanced has not performed as well as expected.
I am watching to see if there are self improvements after the take over by Waste Mgt is in full effect. We will definitely take into consideration their performance when it comes time to review the contract.

RE: ADVANCED DISPOSAL'S SLOPPY WORK
I have had the below reply to my complaint which is posted further down this site and also on the blog:
" Thank you Mr. Harris for your email.

Unfortunately this is not a new complaint. Others have experienced similar problems. We are constantly in touch with Advanced regarding this Problem.

Our contract with Advanced will be coming up for review soon and this and other Problems will be considered.

I am sorry you have had this unresolved problem.

STILL NO PROGRESS IN THIS TRASH CONTAINER ISSUE

Back in late April the sloppy work of Advanced Disposal was brought to the attention of the City with a request that the company STOP leaving the empty trash containers strewn around the streets.

The problem continues and a further complaint has been made to the City Manager and to our Ward 3 Council Members.

Scroll down to April 26th if you want to see the first complaint.  Here are some photos from today FYI:

RE:  SLOPPY WORK BY ADVANCED DISPOSAL CREATING TRAFFIC ISSUES
This is an ongoing issue with how employees at Advanced Disposal do not return the empty trash containers to the lawn, driveway or sidewalks once they empty them.
Rather, they just leave many of them in the street.
As you know these crowded subdivisions were built to squeeze as many homes into an acre as they could and the widths of the streets are already less than optimal, so just leaving these now empty trash containers sitting on the streets rather than putting them back on the homeowners property is creating both a real traffic issue as well as just making the neighborhoods look like a junkyard.
I had sent a complaint to the City in April with photos, but that did not seem to have much effect.  (Copy below)
Can the City now officially bring this sloppy work to their attention so that the empty cans are no longer left in the roadway?
I have photos of this at one of my community blog sites FYI.  Both from April and from today.

TIME FOR NEW GLASSES
Every few years you get an eye exam and if there is any change you get a new updated script.
6 Weeks ago I had an exam which showed minor changes from the old exam, but I decided to get all new glasses anyway.  Prices seem down from what I recall from prior purchases.

My exam was done by the group that did my cataract surgery 3+ yrs ago, my comments are on the cost of new frames and lenses but all firms selling them also have optometrists associated with them for the exams.

I used BJ's Wholesale (Exit 7 off 575) for the distance and reading glasses. You do NOT need membership in BJ's to use the optical dept. The frames and lenses were $140 each.

Today I went to Visionworks for sunglasses with grey tint (Exit 19 off 575) and got a pair of prescription lenses and frame for $120. They have a LOT of frames available, many more than BJ's. As usual takes 10 days to make them up.

So I was pleased to note prices seem reasonable at both places.  (Photo: my 2 pairs from BJ's, Visionworks paperwork FYI)

CHEROKEE COUNTY BOARD OF ASSESSORS

notices are hitting mailboxes in Cherokee County today.

These are just notices of the 2019 tax assessments, not bills.

Probably your bill will be close to last years, but if you want to dispute it you can put in a written appeal by 6/27/19.

The City and County bill together, this is the 3rd year for this, prior to this you got 2 separate bills, one City of Canton and the other Cherokee County.  Now it is just the one bill.

My tax last year was $276.78 and this year it is $267.60 for a savings of $9.18.  Just a bit more than a meal at Micky D's but better than it going up.

Before you ask, it is due to age exemptions, so hurry up and get old and you pay less in taxes.  The City tax for me is $0 and of course the various school taxes dropped off years ago.

See 2 tax bills FYI:

MORE ON TAX

Just in case anyone is interested (and probably no one is) I looked up a home that is the mirror image of my own.  Only difference is:
1)  I have .18 of an acre and it has .13 of an acre.
2)  It is owned by a Dallas, Tx. property investment firm called by several names, including 1H Borrower LP and also Invitation Homes, said firm(s) own at least 4 houses in Holly Mill and a LOT of others in the County.

As usual an easier to read copy is available on the referenced blog site.

I paid property tax of $276.78 in 2018 and 1H Borrower LP paid $2,027.46 or $1,750.68 more than I paid last year.  As you can see, they have no exemptions and I have several.

Don't rush into old age, it isn't as much fun as you might think it is.

HOLLY MILL RECREATION AREA:

The community pool area by 'the View', opened 5/4/19 and will close 9/2/19.

The Enclave opens 5/18/19 through 9/29/19.

Lifeguards will be on duty from 5/24 to 8/2 from noon to 8 PM and weekends while school is in session.  Otherwise it is 'swim at your own risk'.

Kids under 14 not allowed in unless accompanied by an adult.

2 years ago there was vandalism with 2 juveniles from another subdivision causing problems.  The camera system of that time caught them in the act, but these are updated cameras, put in after that incident.

ADVANCED DISPOSAL TRASH COLLECTION
These empty trash cans need to be put onto the sidewalk, driveway or lawn and NOT left in the street.

These Holly Mill streets are just able to have 2 cars pass each other and we don't need any trash cans left on the streets to further hinder the traffic flow.
