Cherokee County Men Arrested In GBI Child Sex Sting
CANTON, GA — Two men from Cherokee County were snared in a statewide operation targeting individuals who sought to have sexual contact with minors. Twenty-one people were arrested over a five-day period beginning Jan. 30 following an investigation conducted by the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
The task force was aided in its efforts by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit, Brookhaven Police Department, DeKalb County District Attorney's Office, United States Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and 22 law enforcement agencies around the state.
The GBI states those arrested were charged with violating the state's Computer or Electronic Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act of 2007 and/or trafficking people for labor or sexual servitude. More charges could be pending against the suspects.
This sting, dubbed Operation Interception by the GBI, was centered in Brookhaven and was carried out after several months of planning. GBI notes the people arrested traveled from around metro Atlanta other states with plans to meet a child for sexual purpose. They range from 22 to 55 in range, and multiple suspects were also found to be in possession of illegal drugs, the GBI notes. Officials also took and processed 24 digital devices as evidence.

The goal of the operation was to apprehend people "who communicate with children online, have sexually explicit conversations, and then travel to meet them for the purpose of having sex," the GBI said.
The ICAC Task Force conducted undercover online operations, using sites that are known to advertise for sex. These undercover agents also used apps that are popular among adults who are seeking sex with minors. These cases will be prosecuted by the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office.
"We applaud this task force for its vigilance and proactive efforts to protect our children," DeKalb District Attorney Sherry Boston. "Those who prey upon our most vulnerable population, must be held accountable for their actions. We will work quickly to file formal charges with the ultimate goal of prosecuting the accused individuals in the interest of justice for these egregious crimes."
