COMCAST OUTAGES -
This evening in the NW Atlanta area we had some rain storms go through, probably near 2" rain and a lot of thunder.  Around 8:30 the power went off for about 3 seconds before rebooting.

Just before the outage I had noticed my Dish TV was a bit fuzzy then when the power went it had to reboot to get the service back up.  Didn't think anything more about it until about 11:30 pm when I happened to look outside to see if it was still raining (it was) and noticed at the end of my driveway a big Comcast cherry picker rig.

The Comcast box was opened up, it is right on my property line but before I had a chance to snap a photo they had backed up to the prior box across the street and were working on it.  So probably the Comcast service was out from 8:30 onward.  Made me real pleased to have dumped them 5 or so months ago.

Below:  In our area these green boxes every few houses are the Comcast repeaters which boost the signals.

CHEROKEE COUNTY BOARD OF ASSESSORS

Your 2018 notificiation of your annual property assessment is probably in your mail box today.

You have 45 days to file any appeal.

In my case with my Homestead and Age exemptions I found my tax going from last year's (2017) $284.20 to the current (2018) $276.78.

I have never been great at reading tax bills but it looks like the lesser amount due is because the millage rate for 'County Incorp' going from 5.600 from last year to 5.4850 this year.  Thus a small savings.

City of Canton property tax is now rolled into the County billing, so you should not get any 2nd tax bill as was the case before the change.  I am exempt from City property tax due to age.  The largest part of the tax bill is for Schools.

The general HM tax bill for those with no exemptions should be around $1,500.

-------------------

Property Tax -TAX BILLS & PAYMENTS
New due date for 2018 taxes - NOVEMBER 15th

Property tax bills are mailed out in early September of each year and payment is due November 15th. Taxes not paid by November 15th are considered delinquent and will incur interest at the rate prescribed by law per month on any portion unpaid.  At 90 days delinquent  a Fi.Fa. (tax lien) fee of $22.50 (on bills less than $100.00) or $32.50 ( on bills more than $100.00)  There is also a  5% penalty every 120 days to max out at 20%, figured on the remaining balance still due.

If you have not received a tax bill by October 1st or if you are a new property owner and cannot obtain a tax bill from the previous owner, please call the Tax Commissioners office at 678-493-6400.

Checks should be made payable to Cherokee County Tax Commissioner. Mail payments to:

Woman Injured When SUV Crashes Into Tree In Canton

  • Woman Injured When SUV Crashes Into Tree In Canton-2
CANTON, GA — A woman suffered minor injuries Monday morning when the SUV she was driving crashed into a tree in Canton.
Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services crews responded to a call of an accident just after 8 a.m. May 14 along Prominence Point Parkway near Lantana Trail.
Crews arrived to find a white Kia SUV left the roadway, traveled on to the median and hit a tree, said Cherokee fire spokesperson Tim Cavender.
The tree was uprooted and pushed about 40 feet into the roadway. The driver of the SUV, a 36-year-old woman, was conscious and alert on the scene, but complained of neck pain. She was transported to Northside Hospital Cherokee for evaluation.

The accident is under investigation by the Canton Police Department.

POOR MAIL DELIVERY IN HOLLY MILL
Picked up the mail from the box today and took it with me to read over lunch at IHOP.
Couple of magazines, junk mail and an offer for an Amexp card which was annoying as I already have 3. I looked a bit closer and noted it was for someone else and so were the magazines, the junk mail and a GEICO item which I had already torn up.

So while I got some mail it was for a neighbor and my Time Magazine which normally shows up on Sat is probably being read by some other neighbor.

I learned long ago to have any important mail go to a P. O. Box and even those utility bills that show up at the box are subject to direct debits just in case those get lost also.

I'll take the misdirected mail over later.

Anyone else in Holly Mill having poor mail service???

CHEROKEE COUNTY SOLICITORS OFFICE

Readers might have noted that I have asked both Mrs Hobson and Mr Hayes several questions about the office they were running for.

Neither has replied, except Mrs Hobson said she would but has not.

I asked the same questions to the current occupant of the office and the next day got the below reply.  I am disappointed in the 2 candidates for not having taken the time to provide the information, after all both are running for the job and it seems that they should know what constitutes the office they want to run.

(FYI:  Mr Hayes is actually already employeed there for 2+ years)

Sarah Hobson For Cherokee County Solicitor General   Davey, as always I deeply appreciate the support and the abundance of information you share with me.

As I’ve said before, I apologize I can’t always respond in haste, especially given the campaign has less than three weeks to go. As you’ve mentioned,
we met out on the street — and the more people I’m able to connect with in such a fashion, the larger margin we will win by. To that end, I spend an tremendous amount of time visiting with voters and answering questions directly — 99% of those questions surround my background, my vision for the office, and what makes me the best candidate for the office.
Truth be told, I rely on voters like you to help this campaign understand issues from a different perspective, including the granular detail that you provided in your blog post, because the rigors of running a campaign, a business, and a household prevent me from spending each day reviewing budgetary and employment documents from the Solicitor’s Office when I have to answer the questions I identified above for nearly each and every voter I encounter on the phones and at the doors.

It’s especially important considering that most voters are beginning to hear dishonesty and lies from certain people desperate to win. As I’ve mentioned, I deeply appreciate your support and ask that you continue to share the information you collect. I cannot say thank you enough, and when we win I can guarantee I will be asking for a lot more as I prepare to take office in January 2019.

DESCRIPTION

Not sure why "Post to Neighbors" is the only category available to me, for reporting - and I tried this once before with no success. But whatever company is doing whatever they are doing in the power line easement that runs between Prominence Point & Keeter did a REALLY lousy job of keeping the resulting erosion/mud on the work site. The sidewalk here is covered with mud, and has been for over a week.

Advil vs. Aleve - Which is better?

I have both on hand along with some oxy, which I don’t like to use.

I was wondering which was best so I looked it up on the Internet. Seems you can find just about anything there and I determined that for my usage it would be Aleve. Of course I determined this just after taking 3 Advil’s. But it is noted for next time.

Here is what I found:

“Which drug is safer and better for different kinds of pain? Advil and Aleve are popular over-the-counter painkillers that have more similarities than differences between them.

Both belong to the class of drugs called NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). These drugs relieve pain and reduce fever and inflammation. So they are used for headache, body ache, common cold, cramps, fever, sprains and mild arthritis. The active ingredient in Advil is Ibuprofen and in Aleve it's Naproxen.

Pain relief lasts longer with Aleve and Aleve works better for pain resulting from inflammation (eg. arthritis). On the other hand, Advil works better for people with acid reflux or those who frequently use sun-tanning beds because Aleve has negative side effects for such patients.”

So I will use up and retire the Advil in favor of Aleve for my arthritis.

City cracks down on waterwaste “Willful waste”or failure to fix a leak could lead to a shut-off in city water service under an ordinance recently approved by the Canton City Council.

Service could be cut off upon reasonable notice, unless circumstances require immediate action, and would not be restored “until all water bills and the bill for the cost ofcutting off and again turning on the water shall have been paid,” the ordinance says. The measure passed 5-1, with Council Member Nick Estes voting against*.

The water conservation measure cites examples ofwaste as failing to repair acontrollable leak, such as abrokensprinkler head, within 30 days;or operating a lawn irrigation system when it’s raining.

Exceptions include water use in firefighting or hydrant inspections;asadust-controlmeasure; to abate spills of flammable or otherwise hazardous materials where appropriate;inconstruction; in power-washing, unless prohibited by drought restrictions; in approved mobile car washes; and when emptying swimming pools for maintenance, when proper local rules are followed.

CHEROKEE COUNTY SOLICITORS RACE
Showing up in area mailboxes is the most recent incoming from candidate Sarah Hobson.
Didn't know that they made post cards this big!

Anyway I already voted by mail for her based on having spoken to her when she dropped by asking for me to consider her for this race.

Also got 2 other mailings from her which makes me wonder if her opponent is doing any campaigning as I have yet to see anything from him.

I did go to see his site but it didn't provide any info to me that would make me want to vote for him.

I expect that Mrs Hobson will win the Republican Primary which means that she will be the next solicitor as the general election is not much of a factor in a strongly Republican county.

NEW POOL PASSES ARE SENT OUT

Arriving this week are the 2018 HM HOA Pool Tags (2).  The Recreation area community pool will open May 5th - Sept 3rd and the Enclave pool will be open May 19 - Sept 23rd.

Misc Note:  The Assn. letter might be just a bit confusing on the dates as it says "September 3th" for the Rec and "September 23rd" for Enclave.  The 3th should have been 3rd, minor typo, it closes for the year September 3rd.

OK, work all done.  Fortunately the 2 newly completed sections do not need any striping.  You might recall the last time work was done along that stretch and Keeter it was about 3 months before the lane markings got added.

When these jobs are bid, the quantity is a calculated but when we get in the field we usually find that we were a bit short or a bit over on our exact calculations.

In this case we had quantities remaining and were able to use that quantity to fix the troubled areas on Prominence Point.

The total for the 2017 Splost paving project was approximately $1.2 million (to pave multiple streets throughout the City, not just Prominence). The project is scheduled to be completed tomorrow."

Good to hear from you Nick!

Since I emailed you the site ‘SeeClickFix’ has had this below input on the subject of that section of Prominence Point Parkway.

Seems that sometime next month the ‘Paving List’ will be before the Council for approval.

Perhaps you can help get that both put through and nudge them to see that the Prominence Point Parkway is high enough up the list that it gets done this summer.

The referenced ‘base failure’ of the roadway indicates that this might be a larger job and sometimes these get put off while the lesser jobs get the more immediate attention as they show results faster.

Here is the reply FYI:
“City of Canton Director of Public Works (Verified Official)
The work order that was issued was to put a temporary patch in the pot holes to keep the road passable. This road will be on our 2018 Paving list that will be presented to City Council in May, and will then be paved as quickly as possible from that time. The road obviously has a base failure that will require that section to be removed and built back from the base layer. Hopefully this answers your questions. We definitely understand your frustration and we are working to get this handled with a permanent solution.
04/05/2018"

3 of the 4 Holly Mill subdivisions use that stretch of roadway, probably 500+ homes of the 663 in the 4 phases of HM, so it is an important project for us.

Dear Councilman Estes:

Although this 'fix' is being looked into by the City, as a donor to your campaign ($200), I would like your assurance that the City takes the matter seriously.

Having our Councilman take a good look should make a big difference in getting things taken in hand.

Work has been done on this stretch of road before but it seems to be ineffective in getting us a decent roadway.  I and a lot of Holly Mill folks drive on it every day.

Did the contractor do a bad job?  Use inferior materials?

Anyway, Nick, this stretch of roadway needs a good look and then a more permanent fix than what it has been getting.

Can you please ride herd on this issue and make sure the City gets the matter some attention and a fix that will last longer than a few months.

The roadway was re-surfaced recently (4-5 months ago?). I am surprised that it is already badly crumbling. I have no doubt that the potholes will re-appear. I thought this was supposed to be a permanent fix. Am I incorrect? In addition, the potholes just south of this area are already coming back. Isn't it about time for a permanent fix for this area?

The Economic Policy Institute broke down how much it costs families to live in each county in America. See how yours fared.By Kristal Dixon, Patch Staff |  | Updated

Here's How Much You Need To Earn To Live In Cherokee County

CANTON, GA — Cherokee County is one of the more expensive places to live in Georgia, according to the Economic Policy Institute. The organization recently released its 2018 family budget calculator that estimates how costly it is to live in each of America's 3,142 counties and 611 metro areas.
The group estimates a family of two adults and two children in Cherokee, would need to earn a combined $80,278 per year — or $6,690 a month — to live comfortably. Here's how the group breaks down that number:
Housing: $1,059 per month
Food: $782 per month
Child Care: $980 per month
Transportation: $1,242 per month
Health Care: $961 per month
Other Necessities: $743 per month
Taxes: $924 per month
Compared to the metro Atlanta area, that might seem a tad bit more expensive. To live in the metro area, that same family would need to earn a combined $78,717 per year, or $6,560 every month, to "attain a modest yet adequate standard of living," the organization said.
The family budget calculator accounts for geographic differences in cost of living, but does not include many expenses associated with a middle-class lifestyle, including student loan payments or saving for college or retirement
"Our Family Budget Calculator goes beyond traditional measures like the poverty line to paint a detailed picture of what families need to get by," EPI Senior Economist Elise Gould said in a release. "The latest update provides even greater detail on how costs vary throughout the country. It is above all else a tool for policymakers to advocate for ways to raise wages and make their communities more affordable."
Perhaps unsurprisingly, San Francisco ranked first in the nation as the most expensive metro area with a basic budget of $148,439 a year for a two-parent, two-child household. On the flipside, that same household would only need to earn $58,906 to live comfortably in Brownsville, Texas, the least expensive metro area in the country.
The group noted that many low-wage workers don't make enough money to adequately provide for their family's basic needs. Even after adjusting for higher state and city minimum wages, the group said, there is "nowhere in the country" where a minimum-wage worker would earns enough.
"It's clear from our analysis that, even in less-expensive areas, many families will struggle to meet their basic needs," said research assistant Zane Mokhiber. "The good news is we have many different ways to remedy this, from a higher minimum wage to ambitious child care reform. Policymakers should draw on a range of tools to help people meet the needs laid out in the Family Budget Calculator."

CHEROKEE COUNTY - REMEMBER TO VOTE IN THE COMING PRIMARY (May 22nd)
I had a visit today from Mrs. Sarah Hobson who is running for the post of Cherokee County Solicitor.
She provided me with some election materials regarding her run in the Republican primary for Solicitor. The current occupant is retiring and 2 people are running in the Republican primary.
Mrs Hobson is an attorney with a local practice and seemed like a good choice so I had her put up a yard sign also. See http://sarahforsolicitor.com/home/
Her visit reminded me to call the Voter Registration Office (770 479-0407) and ask for an absentee ballot for both the primacy and the general election. Took about 3 minutes to take care of this.
Years ago I stopped the BS of having to drive to and from a polling place, stand in line and then show some retired KGB border guard my ‘govt issued ID’.
Note: Oregon is one of the 2 states that votes entirely by mail. No standing in line for them. Too bad it isn’t that way in Georgia.
Anyway, no matter who you vote for, now is the time to phone the Voter Registration Office and arrange for your ballots for the primary and later the general election.
