On 10/28 I decided that I had enough of the constant outages from Comcast. From 10/16 to 10/27 I was talking to Comcast CS 8 times for credits for outages, in looking at my account on the Internet I saw that only 3 credits for the outages of the 8 were applied.

On Sat. the 28th, I called Dish and made arrangements with them to start service on Tuesday Oct 31st.

Mike, a Dish installer showed up and started on the project, Peter, a second tech was called in to assist when it appeared that it would take more time than expected.
With the work under way I decided to call Comcast again just to make sure that the account was being closed as previously agreed.  (I was paid up until 10/31).

I spoke to 'Josh' in the Retention section and of course he started on his spiel about what could he do for me to make me change my mind.  I told him that the ship had already sailed, his Comcast equipment had already been removed and the 2 Dish installers were putting in their Dish equipment.  I suggested he save his efforts for the next unhappy Comcast customer as I was finished with the company.

He then started on how I had a 'contract' for 2 years and there would be a big penalty (I think $400 was in there somewhere) for not finishing the contract.

My reply was that the contract was for good service and 8 repeated outages as reported to them over 11 days was not good service and I had no further interest in speaking to him.  I ended the call at that time.

Dish got the TV service working but there was a serious hang up with the Internet as they could not run the cable down the wall in the small bedroom where the computer would be.  Efforts by both techs in the attic were not successful and a small hole ended up punching through the ceiling.

RE:  Hole in Wall:  It was suggested by the installer that someone come out and look at the wall damage and get it repaired.  I said it was a waste of time to spackle, sand, paint the hole, plus the paint would never match.  So I just got an unused face plate and put it over the hole.  Minor problem solved.

Around 9 p.m. I suggested that they pack it in for the day and finish on Wed. 11/1/17.  I spent the next 24 hours playing with the new TV service and a 3rd installer arrived at 2 p.m. Wed. and finished the job with some difficulty but after 7 hours he got the Internet up and running.  The hangup was that this installer did not have the needed codes from Hughes Net to get the service booted up and he had to go through many people at Hughes before he got it up and running.

While Dish installs the TV via satellite they also do the install for Hughes Net with them putting up a second dish on the roof.  In more normal circumstances just one tech would do the entire job in a morning or an afternoon.  My job had some unexpected issues with 2 by 4's being in the way of simply dropping the cable down the interior wall and the 2nd day with the installer not having the needed authorization codes to finish getting me online.
So the change has been made and I am getting acquainted with the new clicker and how things work with Dish.  I may like it and I may not but I did not believe I could continue to use Comcast with their recent miserable service and their not honoring the various assurances of credit for the many outages.

The Comcast equipment will go back to a UPS store to be shipped back to where ever they send such returns.

One thing I like, and was surprised about, is that you can have all the local channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) set to record all the programs during prime time, the recordings will be available to you for 8 days before dropping off the grid.  So if you want to watch Blacklist, NCIS, etc. you do not have to set recordings for each show - choose the proper app and the whole block of shows is recorded.  Outside of these shows you still have to arrange to have a show recorded just like on any of the other services.

Thurs Nov 2, I took the 4 items of equipment and a few minor items back to the UPS Store where they boxed it up for shipment back to Comcast.  I got the usual receipt so Comcast won't be able to say the items were not returned.

MISC NOTE:  A considerable amount of information on Comcast, including the above info with additional updates can be found at:  https://comcastgeorgia.blogspot.com/

Minor Follow up:
Due to the somewhat complicated 2 day install and the slight damage to the bedroom wall, on Friday Nov 3rd, Dish supervisors Ken Mimbs and Jedremiah Stokes dropped by to review the install and the wall.

IHOP Mini Menu - Canton
Now IHOP has a real nice Fish 'n Chips for $9. I was at the location at 575, exit 19 for lunch today.

Hope they incorporate it into the main menu which is far to big and should be cut back by about 30-40 items. Note: There are more fries than it looks like in the photo.

To bad the coleslaw sucks, tastes like it was made with liquid laundry soap. Denny's use to have a nice Fish 'n Chips, but since there are only 2 in all of Metro Atlanta this isn't all that helpful. Overall it gets a B+, OK maybe an A-, I will have it again but I will ask for something to replace the stupid coleslaw, did I mention that the COLE SLAW SUCKS?

Voter turnout less than 1 percent in special election

Election Cherokee_6.jpg

11-08-16 —ELECTION CHEROKEE— Marco Frye, of Woodstock, votes at Mill Creek Middle School on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8. / Staff-Kathryn Ingall
Voter turnout appears lower than previously predicted as early voting came to an end Friday and elections officials prepared for advanced voting to start Monday for city elections and the special election to decide a county Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
As of Friday, the last day for early voting only .55 percent of registered county voters had made a decision on the SPLOST, according to Assistant Supervisor of Election and Registration Jennifer Akins.
The elections office had issued out 136 mail ballots for the special election, she said.
In Canton, 347 residents, or 2.58 percent of registered voters, cast their ballot on the two contested races for Canton City Council in conjunction with the county ballot, Akins said.
The poorest early voting turnout was in Woodstock, with only 33 early voters—0.4 percent of registered voters—and 43 mailed ballots despite it being the city with the most contested races this election.
“The turnout for special elections and municipal elections is generally a lot lower than general elections,” Akins said.
There are 150,380 active registered voters total in Cherokee County; 14,202 voters are registered in the city of Canton and 18,756 voters reside in the city of Woodstock, Akins said.
Dennis Burnette, chairman of the county’s SPLOST committee, said Friday the turnout for the SPLOST or “penny tax” was not surprising, though lower than what he had expected. The issues, he said, stem from the fact that there’s only one issue on the ballot for county voters, it’s not centered around candidates, and 71 percent of registered voters live in unincorporated Cherokee County.
“It’s not so simple as, “Am I going to vote for John Smith or Jane Doe?” he said. “It’s just not that simple. Instead, it’s like a complicated financial arrangement that is hard to understand.”
With so little on the ballot, and only two cities with contested elections, it’s hard to encourage people to go to the polls, Burnette said. But that doesn’t mean what’s on the ballot isn’t important.
The “penny tax” is implemented by the county to pay for capital projects and take the burden off property owners in order to keep county taxes as low as possible, Burnette said. The proposed use of the funds up for voters to decide would help pay for essential projects, like more advanced communications equipment for law enforcement.
“For example our public safety institutes, the sheriff’s department and city police force, personnel and units, and the fire departments use a communications platform that’s getting into the 1970s era and there are some parts of the county where a sheriff’s deputy cannot make or receive calls,” he said. “Funds from this SPLOST is spending over $9 million to equip all the public safety vehicles and personnel with the same communication system that will enable them to be able to communicate anywhere in the county.”
Of the anticipated $253 million from the SPLOST extension, $95 million will go to transportation facilities, equipment, improvements and airport facilities and expansion.
A third of the sales tax collected by Cherokee County is paid by out-of-county visitors, Burnette said, and the SPLOST is not a new tax, just one that needs to be renewed by voters.
“It’s been around a long time and it’s a central part of the way we’re able to provide citizens with the infrastructure they expect to be in place, whether that be roads or parks or public safety,” he said. “It’s just essential.”
But Burnette hasn’t given up hope yet.
“I’m hoping that things will pick up next week when advance voting starts and Woodstock voters will be able to go to the Woodstock library and vote,” he said.
Advance voting will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 30 through Nov. 3 at the Cherokee County Elections Office located at 400 E Main St. in Canton and the Woodstock Public Library located at 7735 Main Street in Woodstock, Akins said.
Advance voting will not take place Nov. 6, the day before Election Day.
Director of Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration Kim Stancil previously told the Tribune city elections vital and said voters should make a concerted effort to learn more about the candidates seeking office and get out to the polls.
She previously projected turnout for the municipal general election for Canton to be about 15 percent and 10 percent for Woodstock. For the countywide SPLOST turnout, her projection was 5 percent.
The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 7 election ended Oct. 10, but voters can go online to see if they are registered and where their designated polling location is.
“To easily determine if eligible to vote in a municipality, voters may visit www.mvp.sos.ga.govand log in with their name, date of birth and county,” she said. “A voter’s specific municipal polling place information as well as early voting locations and times may also be viewed here.”
On Election Day, voters must vote at their assigned precinct for city and county elections, according to Stancil. Canton voters can go to one location to vote on city council seats and the SPLOST, but Woodstock city voters must vote on the municipal ballot at the Woodstock Public Library and go to their regular county precinct to vote on the County Special Election.
The reason for two different voting locations in Woodstock, Stancil said, is because the city does not have their municipal precinct aligned with the county’s, she said.
“Like Canton’s municipal precincts are the same as the county precincts,” she said. “Woodstock only has one municipal precinct for all their city voters. And so it’s a different, the election has to go on a different database than the county election.”
A small group of Woodstock voters whose county precinct is also at the Woodstock Public Library will be able to vote at one location, Stancil said.
The most common ID accepted and seen at the polling locations is a driver’s license, Stancil said. If voters bring a Georgia driver’s license, it can be expired, but if it’s an out-of-state license, it must be valid, she said. The address on the ID does not have to match a voter’s registration address.
“The ID is basically just for the picture,” she said. “A passport is one of the (accepted) IDs, weapons permit if it’s one of the new ones that has the photo on it…Most everybody brings the driver’s license because if it’s a Georgia driver’s license, it can be scanned at the polling place and it brings the voter up on the express poll machine and it’s a lot quicker that way. They don’t have to manually look the voter up.”
Who’s on the ballot?
In Canton, incumbent Councilman Bill Grant faces former City Clerk Susan Stanton for the Ward 2 seat and incumbent Councilman John Rust defends his Ward 3 seat against Stout’s Growlers owner Nick Estes.
Councilwoman Sandy McGrew of Ward 1 is also up for reelection this year but is unopposed.
Three of the four seats expiring this December on the Woodstock City Council, including the mayor’s, are contested in this year’s general election.
Mayor Donnie Henriques is seeking his fourth consecutive term and has Elizabeth “Liz” Baxter, former three-term council member, vying for his seat.
Incumbent Councilman Warren Johnson of Ward 1 is being challenged by Dennis Conway, who has served on the Cherokee Board of Tax Assessors for 19 years.
Councilman Bob Mueller, incumbent for Ward 3, has two candidates running against him: former Planning and Zoning member Colin Ake and Judy Davila, a Planning and Zoning Board member and Cherokee County Volunteer Aging Council project manager.

Students Identified, Arrested after Etowah Threat

Madison Hogan  Cherokee Ledger 10/25/17

Authorities believe the two Etowah High School students who were arrested Wednesday after police received a tip about potential threats made against the school and located incriminating evidence would have carried out the threats if they had not been taken into custody.

Alfred Dupree, 17, of Acworth and Victoria McCurley, 17, of Woodstock were both arrested and each charged each with three counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, four counts of terroristic threats and acts, one count of criminal attempt to commit arson and one count of possession and/or transportation of destructive device/explosive with intent to kill, injure or destroy any public building, police said.

Arrest warrants for McCurley and Dupree have been sealed by a judge, according to Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Marianne Kelley.

She said as far as law enforcement could tell, the two suspects were friends.  “There is an indication that this would have been carried through if we had not intervened,” Sheriff Frank Reynolds said Wednesday.

Investigators completed search warrants on the homes of both suspects Monday and Tuesday, Kelley said.

A search of at least one of their homes uncovered “a homemade incendiary device which was described as a flammable substance and an undetermined powder substance,” firearms and a personal journal, law enforcement said.

“Both substances were turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to have them tested and determine the chemical material,” Kelley said.

Kelley said Wednesday that the agency’s Criminal Investigation Division was continuing its investigation into the threats.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office was alerted by the Cherokee County School of Police Department of potential threats made against the school about 5 p.m. Monday, they said.

Reynolds said Tuesday afternoon that once his department was aware of the threats, they immediately worked with school police to apprehend the suspects and collect evidence, using search warrants Monday night and Tuesday.

“We were notified through a tip line and upon that our investigators along with the school police conducted some interviews with one of the suspects and our investigation evolved from that point,” he said.

Reynolds assured the community that there was no known threat at this time to Etowah High or the students. No additional security has been ordered for the school, he said.  “We are very confident that this is not a growing problem,” he said.

Cherokee County School District spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby issued a statement Wednesday afternoon on behalf of Superintendent Dr. Brian Hightower.

“We recognize these as very serious charges, and that will be reflected in the severe administrative disciplinary actions the school district will take against these students,” she said. “We will not tolerate violence of any kind at our schools.”

Jacoby said the school district deeply appreciated the community member who reported the information to the Woodstock Police Department tip line that ultimately led the two students’ arrests.

“Our School District Police Department and administrative staff assisted with the investigation in a continuation of our longtime partnership with the Sheriff’s Office to maintain a safe and secure environment for our students and employees,” she said.

The district takes all threats to the safety and security of students and employees seriously, Jacoby said.

“Anyone with information about threats is asked to immediately report it to police,” she said.

Etowah High School Principal Robert Horn sent a letter to parents Tuesday, announcing a community member had alerted police to the potential threat.

“Immediate action and investigation began, and, as a result, two students are currently in custody,” he wrote. “At this time there are no other suspects and no active threat against Etowah High School.”

Horn said the safety and security of all students and staff members is of the utmost importance and the school district would continue to partner with the sheriff’s office throughout the investigation.

“I will continue to keep you in the loop in this regard,” he wrote. “Any threat on school safety/security will not be tolerated and as such these students will also face severe disciplinary action, as well as any applicable criminal charges.”

CANTON ABSENTEE BALLOTS ARE IN YOUR MAILBOX TODAY
The published info from the local paper seemed to indicate that these absentee ballots would not be mailed until next Monday.
Probably a screw up by the paper, but mine arrived today (Wed 10-18-17), so probably they were mailed this past Monday.

No matter either way, mine is not filled out and will be back in the mail tomorrow.

Only Ward 2 and 3 were contested races and I voted for the challengers in each race (Stanton and Estes) on the basis that what is now in office should be replaced by NEW people.

I have only been in Canton 22 months but have found the elected officials AND the useless City Manager to be very uninterested in any input from citizens.

My own ignored issues were about better regulations for any firearms businesses and an intersection that needed some trees removed.

No interest from elected officials and snotty comments from the useless City Manager.

For the SPLOT 1% tax continuing I voted 'NO'.

Douglas Property Management (DPM) Woodstock, Ga. -

Poorly rated/reviewed online

Why use a property management firm that has so many complaints online? Time for Holly Mill to change to another firm.

By Davey Crockett (Patch Poster) - Updated

DOUGLAS PROPERTY MANAGEMENT (Woodstock, Ga)
The internet site Birdeye has 95 reviews of Douglas PM, seems they collect them from all the other complaint sites on the Internet and lump them together.
DPM gets 2.4 stars out of 5.
The reason they don't score worse is that many of those 5 star ratings are duplicates from several sites and read the same with the posters name changed.
For instance Cbowen846 is also ThomasB, both posting the same info and in fact Cbowen846 is on 2 sites exactly the same complaint.
In Feb 2017 the Holly Mill BOD got involved and they also jumped in to give their pals at DPM glowing and unjustified reviews. Here are their names: Amanda F, Frank A, Julie F, all officers of the HM BOD.
If you cut out the duplicate 5 star and HOA junk reviews the real star rating of DPM would be 1.5 out of 5.
They are a crappy firm and as a resident of HM I have posted my own complaint and think that they should be removed as the property management firm of Holly Mill.

Nick Estes
Nick Estes
♦ Facebook — Nick Estes for Canton
♦ What’s the biggest problem facing Canton today, and how do you plan to address it?
Sustainable growth is the biggest problem and opportunity that we are facing as a city. As development continues to accelerate in and around Canton, we need to make sure that we have the right infrastructure to support the level of growth in residential and economic growth. I will work collaboratively with the mayor and city council to think proactively to develop plans and actions to drive the right kind of growth for our city while maintaining the charm that makes us unique.
♦ Name something Canton needs more of and less of. Why?
We need to see more action and decisions around how we support sustainable growth across our entire city. The near term focus has over indexed on economic development in the historic downtown district, which has been successful. I will work locally to ensure we boost the level of engagement for ideas and feedback.
Canton needs to see less committees and more action. I’ve heard from many residents who dedicated their time on committees to provide feedback on our plans and now they want to see their ideas in action. I support feedback from our community and will work to continue to engage locally, but want to make sure everyone’s efforts are translated into action.
♦ What has the current city council done well and what do they need to work on?
I respect the level of alignment and collaboration that most of the members have achieved as they have worked together. This year, I have had the opportunity to meet, listen and share ideas for growth with many on the council. If elected, I will use my professional experience and passion for our city to continue the momentum. As we grow, I believe that the council will need to focus on the sustainability of growth and ensuring that the right level of infrastructure (including transportation, water, sewer and schools) are well thought out to enable our city to grow but maintain the charm that makes us unique.
♦ With your direction, where do you see the city heading in the next four years and how do you plan to make that a reality?
By day, I am a solutions-oriented business leader. I will leverage my experience to drive action related to the overarching strategy and ideas that have been outlined to sustainably grow our city over the next four years.
♦ The city has seen a double homicide, several shootings, a prostitution ring and a drug deal turned armed robbery in the past few months. Many residents have said this is not the Canton they know. What do you think the city should do to address these crimes in our community?
I believe that crime prevention first starts with community policing, which is something that Chief Mitchell and the city have embraced. We have proactively seen police officers in all communities and their engagement and presence will continue to drive us back to the safe communities that we wish to see. Second, while these incidents have occurred, the speed at which our police department was able to respond and solve these crimes is something needs to continue to be recognized. Finally, our city needs to continue provide support and resources to ensure our police force can provide the level of support our city requires.

My comment:
The current administration (mayor/Council and City Manager) do not seem responsive to suggestions from citizens.  I found this to be true in bringing up a traffic issue and in asking for a few sentences to be added to current codes to mandate that any store (now or in the future) selling firearms MUST have all of them locked up during hours they are closed.  Time to get some new people in City Hall who will listen and react.    (Just for full disclosure I donated $200 to Estes)

LUNCH AT IHOP CANTON (I-575 Exit #19)

Happened to be there today for lunch and Samantha, a Corporate HQ Executive stopped by to make some inquiries about my dining experience at IHOP. We had a long conversation and one topic covered was the seemingly poor advertising given to the IHOP 'Senior Discount', which is practically unknown by senior diners.

While it is true that menu's have a very small section for senior items (6-8 items) which are just smaller portions, they also have a 10% senior discount for the entire menu IF you know to ask for it. In my many years of IHOP meals no one from the wait staff has ever asked me if I wanted the senior discount.

So I suggested that they play up this discount and it seems that someone at IHOP was thinking along those lines as Samantha mentioned that in December they were planning to have a promotion to acquaint seniors with the discount.
A bit more IHOP info is from the web FYI:

Business Description:  The International House of Pancakes (IHOP) is a United States-based restaurant chain that specializes in breakfast foods. While its focus is on breakfast foods such as pancakes, waffles, French toast, omelettes, and blintzes, it has evolved into also offering a menu of full course meals and a variety of desserts. IHOP operates over 1,300 restaurants in 49 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada and Mexico. More than 99% of the locations are franchises.

Discount:  Most locations will offer a 10% discount and may also provide a senior menu with smaller portions and discounted prices. Some locations may offer a half price dinner one night a week.

Age Requirement: 55+

Discount Restrictions: Most locations are franchised and participation, discount amount and age requirements will vary by location.

CANTON CITY COUNCIL ELECTION NOV 7th
This is to fill 3 City Council posts, only Ward 2 and 3 have actual contests. Ward 1 has only the incumbent running so she wins with no opposition.

Voters should be aware that while Canton is divided into 3 'Wards' which have actual boundaries, these are largely meaningless for voting as each voter can vote in each of the 3 Wards.

For instance Holly Mill is in Ward 3 BUT voters can vote for candidates in wards 1 and 2 also.

My recommendations for Wards 2 and 3 are for the challengers rather than the incumbents. That is for Ward 2 Susan Stanton and for Ward 3 Nick Estes.

I have been unimpressed with the City Council, Mayor and particularly the City Manager.

From meeting with Mr. Estes and exchanges of email with both of the new candidates, I believe that they are also frustrated with the lack of interest in citizens opinions displayed by the incumbents.

I will be voting for both Stanton and Estes with the hope that with some new people on the 6 member council we can get a new City Manager to replace the current Mr. Peppers.

Qualifying Ended With 2 Contested Seats In Canton

By Kristal Dixon (Patch Staff) -

CANTON, GA -- Qualifying has come to a close for the 2017 municipal elections in the city of Canton, and residents will head to the polls on Nov. 7 to cast their votes in two contested seats.

Incumbents Bill Grant of Ward 2, Sandy McGrew of Ward 1 and John Rust of Ward 3 all qualified to seek another four-year term on the City Council. Grant will be challenged by former City Clerk Susan Stanton while Rust will face off against resident Nick Estes.

Stanton was Canton's city clerk for about five years until April when the City Council voted to terminate her employment. City Manager Billy Peppers hired Lou Stewart as her replacement

Along with the city's election, voters countywide will consider renewing the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST. If approved, Cherokee County and each of its cities will get funding to carry out various capital improvement projects.

    ---------------------------------------------

NOV 7th ELECTION FOR 3 CANTON CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS:

Although the City is divided up into 'Wards' these artificial boundaries are largely meaningless as this is an 'at large' election where voters can choose candidates in any of the wards, not just the one you happen to live in.

The only possible use for the dividing up of the City into Wards might be that if you had a traffic problem, overgrown lot, etc, you should take it up with the Council members of your Ward as that person will actually be living within that Ward and should be able to help you.

Otherwise the Ward designation is pretty worthless as you can vote for candidates in each Ward.

    Below is the ballot FYI.

I always vote via 'absentee ballot' as I am not going to bother to drive to a polling place and show some ex-KGB Border Guard my government issued ID nor would I stand in line that might be short or long, you won't know until you get there.

So my expense for voting is one stamp to return the ballot and a few minutes registering online for it and a few more minutes filling it out.

My vote this time around will be for the challengers in Ward 2 and Ward 3.  This is on the general theory that those in office should be out of office as they are likely part of the problem in screwing up the country, state and city.  So get new people in and if they are as bad as the ones voted out of office then the next election dump them also.

I did meet with Mr. Nick Estes who is running in Ward 3 against incumbent John Rust, so both Estes and Ms. Stanton will get my vote.

As to the SPLOT, I will vote 'No' as we have enough taxes now and don't need to continue it again.  Also if your definition of the usage of the tax is in mice type you just have to assume that the powers that be are trying to flim flam you, if they can't explain it in 50 words then they are up to no good.  So I am voting 'NO' on that.

Just one final word here.  While I have only been in Canton for 22 months I have brought up 3 separate issues with mayor/council and have not found any assistance there.

This lack of interest also includes the City Manager Mr. Pepper who is definitely 10 miles of bad road and should be removed by the council for someone more interested in input from residents of Canton.

Some correspondence with the Canton City Manager FYI:

Just FYI and as a matter of 'full disclosure', on 9/30/17 I met with Mr. Nick Estes who is running for Canton, Ward 3, City Council, contending for the seat with the incumbent Mr. John Rust.

I donated $200 to Mr. Estes and authorized him to put up 2 campaign signs on my property.

    DESCRIPTION

Please notify Code Enforcement of this overgrown lot next to the Dollar Tree store at the T intersection of Prominence Point Pky and Ash St Connector (old name is Gray Rd).
This is a corner lot, vision is blocked by over grown weeds and trees. Also the curb cut for a potential driveway allows rocks and gravel to roll into the street.
Owners should be required to clean it up ASAP.
