City sets hearings on proposed tax increase
Canton has called public hearings on a tentative millage rate, set by the mayor and City Council, that officials say would increase property taxes by 5.35%.
The hearings are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday and 6 p.m. July 25 in council chambers at City Hall.
The tentative tax increase will result in a millage rate of 5.400 mills, an increase of 0.274 mills, according to a city announcement.
Without the tentative tax increase, the millage rate would be no more than 5.126 mills.
A home with a fair market value of $250,000 would see taxes rise by about $27.40, the city said.
The increase, for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $200,000, would be roughly $21.92.

(My Misc Comment:
For the last 2 yrs the city has billed property taxes via the County. Once you got both a City and County tax bill, now you just get the County which has a line for the City taxes. No more 2 bills each year, now just one bill.
Also some of us older citizens are exempt from City taxes if we also have an age exemption and a homestead exemption. For myself I don't see any tax increase coming)
